Once the sun peeked above the horizon and started to shine in my bedroom window, I decided that I had been laying there long enough.

I knew that not everyone would be up yet, but I was pretty sure that I could grab a shower and a cup of coffee without spoiling anyone’s slumber.

“Morning sunshine,” Reba greeted me at the kitchen table as I stepped out of my bedroom.

“Good morning,” I reflexively said, though I was completely surprised that she was awake at this early hour and not in a foul mood. “Did you sleep okay?”

“Not really,” she shrugged. “That scratching under the cabin made it impossible to get any sleep.”

“You heard that scratching, too?”

“Sure did,” Reba nodded. “How could you not? It was so loud. I wonder if your mother and Penny were able to get any sleep at all.”

“Me too. I’m going to grab a shower and coffee, and then head over to the office and let them know that we may have something big living under the cabin.”

“Have fun,” Reba said. “I’m going to hang here and see what I can get on this television.”

She picked up a long remote control from the kitchen table and pointed at a small TV that was mounted to the wood-paneled wall.

The screen remained black with some random letters and numbers in the top corner.

Reba pressed a few buttons at random and then started to shake the remote control at the TV angrily.

“Cable TV, my foot,” she huffed. She turned the TV off and tossed the controller back onto the table. “Looks like I’m going for a walk with you.”

“Great!” I said. “I’ll be ready in about fifteen minutes.”

I went and showered and brewed a small pot of coffee. Reba and I filled our travel mugs up and headed out to see if we could get things taken care of.

It was brisk but very pleasant as we walked around the rugged campground road. There were several people out already enjoying the early morning sun and crisp air.

“I should’ve stayed inside and stared at the black screen,” Reba complained as she shivered through the walk.

“Oh, come on,” I said, trying to encourage her. “Just keep moving and before you know it, you’ll be warmed up and ready to tackle anything that comes your way. Besides, I heard it was going to be almost eighty degrees today.”

“Who’d you hear that from? Was it the TV that doesn’t work or the sketchy wifi we have?”

“Neither,” I said. “For your information, I was sure to look up the weather reports before we left Coffee Creek. I’ve been camping enough to know that you can’t count on anything to give you the connection to the real world the way we’re used to. And that’s a big part of the beauty of it.”

“See, that’s where you and I differ, lady. I would love to just watch my shows and hate scroll through some Facebook right about now.”

“Hate scroll?” I asked. I’d never heard that term before. I didn’t even know that Reba was on Facebook.
